“The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.”-Audrey Hepburn

Who doesn’t want beautiful eyes? To be able to speak words with just one look? To flirt, to express emotion, to show your love.

Going back to my awkward adolescent years, I remember sitting in front of the television, turning the “knob” to change the channel and becoming fixated on a certain mascara commercial. “My eyes got me this commercial”, the actress started with. She was beautiful and had the prettiest eyes with the longest lashes I had ever seen.

I remember begging my mother for permission to wear mascara. However, even after I was granted that permission, I was never able to gain those long, lush lashes…until now!

“Latisse” has changed my eyelash life. Latisse is a medication that when brushed above the rim of your lashes, will make your lashes grow longer and thicker over time. Fast-forward two months and my lashes are longer, thicker and highlight my eyes like never before.

My husband recently asked me, ”Why doesn’t every woman use Latisse?” (great question!) Going out without mascara is once again an option for me. False eyelashes are definitely a thing of the past.

But, at 40-something, my eyes still needed a bit more of a tune up.

“The eyes are the windows to your soul”. They can tell a story about you in mere moments. So often they can tell too much. They show the dark circles, the “bags”. They can tell how tired you are. They can swell up when you didn’t get enough sleep. They can show their fine lines and give up your age. (that’s something NO-ONE needs to know.)

For the past twenty years, I have been trying various eye creams looking for the all-in-one “cure all” for the bags, the fine lines, the dark circles. Then I found SkinMedica.

SkinMedica makes pharmaceutical grade skin care products. You need a doctor’s license to order & then sell their products. It is a company that has invested millions into studies and has conclusive results for each and every one of their products. Double-blind placebo controlled studies. (the same kind used to study medications)

I started using TNS Eye Cream & TNS Essential Serum 120 days ago. I am a firm believer in these products. I have myself seen such dramatic results under my eyes that I include my own before and after pics on the slide show in my office. (see pictures)

(I started with the TNS Essential Serum and I am now using their TNS Recovery Complex intermittently with the TNS Essential Serum. The skin on my face feels at least 10 years younger!)

Statistically, the TNS Essential Serum has a 97% retention rate. (SkinMedica’s patient statistics state that 97% of people who purchased it, returned multiple times to purchase it again secondary to HIGH satisfaction of results!)

This week, someone VERY smart at SkinMedica decided to put together a “Springtime promotion for the eyes”. You can purchase a LARGE bottle of Latisse (5ml, retail value $179) and a SkinMedica TNS Eye Cream (retail value $95) together for a total of $199. ($75 savings)

There are VERY limited quantities for this promotion.

Newtown MediSpa has decided to add to this promotion by offering an option to add in a “crow’s feet” Botox treatment for only $175! (value up to $275) Take care of your crows feet…before they PERMANENTLY set into your skin. This Botox offer is available until April 30th only. (one per person)

Call Newtown MediSpa to schedule your appointment OR go on Newtown MediSpa’s Facebook and use our widget to book online now. 203-975-8234

“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” -Audrey Hepburn

When primates evolved 60 million years ago, big blocks of facial muscles broke into small bits of specialized tissue. Some pucker your lips. Others raise your eyebrows. Still others are specialized to help you to scowl or to shoot an angry look at someone who may have slipped into your parking space. My little girls often liken my facial expressions to that of the “Evil Queen” when I scowl at them. (a tell-tale sign that I am in need of a touch-up of Botox)

In Carl Zimmer’s article “Why Darwin Would Have Loved Botox” (http://discovermagazine.com/2008/nov/15-why-darwin-would-have-loved-botox#.UQ9Ado4orGk) he explains how studies in anthropology found that these expressive range of movements are expressed not only on faces, but in brains too.

“If a monkey sees a picture of another monkey making a face…a network of neurons becomes active in its brain. And emotion-processing parts become active as well. Different centers switch on in response to different emotions,”

When we see faces, we don’t just recognize them, we also make the same face, if only for a moment. If you see someone wearing a big grin, muscles on your face will start contracting in about a third of a second. The same goes for angry ones and sad ones.”

This facial feedback hypothesis posits that just as our emotions influence our facial expressions, our facial expressions can actually loop back and influence our emotions.

Since Botox is most often used to treat the upper face where negative emotions such as anger and worry are expressed, it makes sense that Botox can dampen the feelings of worry and anger over time. Leaving more time to smile and feel good…inside and out. (and lately, I am all for eliminating the negative. We need to see less scowls and more smiles!)

And though some studies do suggest that Botox may provide happiness on a deeper level than just eliminating wrinkles, if asked the question “Does Botox Make You Happier?”, most of our patients, on an aesthetic level would answer with an enthusiastic “YES!”

The truth about Chemical peels is that we have come a LONG , LONG way from the 2002 humorous sitcom scene.

Harpar’s Bazaar recently posted an article on “The Secrets To Celebrity Skin” ’Our favorite celebs look flawless every time they step out on the red carpet. We spoke with the skincare gurus behind these perfect complexions and got their top tips for perfect, glowing skin.’

Their recommendation:

by: “The Facialist: Kate Somerville: Opt for 2-step exfoliation. Los Angeles facialist Kate Somerville suggests pairing a physical exfoliant, like a scrub, with a chemical peel. “This, and a hydration step, will give you a gorgeous glow,” she says.

Their Client: Anna Paquin, 2013

A good friend of mine/patient received her first “SkinMedica peel series” recently. It was NOT painful. In fact, she barely peeled at all. (not everyone does) But whether you “see” a reaction on the surface or not, the real “magic” of Chemical Peels is what the treatment does for your skin on a cellular level. (BTW, for the first time in YEARS, maybe even a decade, she does not feel a need to use foundation cream… her skin tone is even and it feels so soft!)

Every year, millions of chemical peels are performed. It is a skin rejuvenation technique that has been used by physicians for decades.

The peels are designed to improve the appearance of the skin.

Whether you want to:

reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth,

improve the appearance of minor scars,

treat acne prone skin,

reduce age spots, freckles, dark patches or

just improve the look and feel of your skin,

a peel is the right choice for you.

At Newtown MediSpa, our master aesthetician, Ivona, can customize your facial to include a regimen with one of our SkinMedica dedicated peels. This will help to increase your cellular turnover to stimulate healthy cell growth while exfoliating dead cells…giving you a look and feel you will love!

During a SkinMedica chemical peel, a solution is applied to the skin surface, causing the surface cells to separate (over a few days) and lightly flake or peel off, thus allowing new skin to regenerate. The new skin is generally smoother and less wrinkled. Following a chemical peel, the skin color may also be more uniform. Whether or not you peel after your treatment is directly related to your skin’s condition.

The formulation may cause a glow, a flaking or a peel to the skin, depending on the type of peel you receive.

A chemical peel can make dull appearing skin appear more vibrant and vitalized!

Chemical peels can be done at different depths — light, medium or deep — depending on your desired results. Each type of chemical peel uses a different chemical solution. Deeper chemical peels produce more-dramatic results, but also involve longer recovery times.

Light chemical peel. “Illuminize” peel: A light, or superficial, chemical peel removes the outer layer of skin (epidermis). It can be used to treat fine wrinkles, acne, uneven skin tone and dryness. You might have a light chemical peel as often as once a week for up to six weeks — depending on your desired results. Leaves your skin fresh and glowing!

Medium chemical peel. “Vitalize”: This type of chemical peel removes skin cells from the epidermis and from portions of the upper part of your middle layer of skin (dermis). A Vitalize peel can treat wrinkles, acne scars and uneven skin tone. Recovery takes anywhere from 3 days to one week (you could have flaky- lightly peeling skin)

Deep chemical peel. A “Rejuvenize” peel removes skin cells from the epidermis and from portions of the mid to lower layer of your dermis. A deep chemical peel is beneficial if you have deeper wrinkles, scars or uneven skin tone/age/sun spots.

Chemical peels can be beneficial for most skin types including sensitive skin. Chemical peels not only treat problem prone skin, but they can also be preventative as well.

While any time of year is good for a chemical peel the shorter winter days are the ideal time since there’s not as much sunlight to have to protect yourself from.

A SkinMedica peel is the perfect way to exfoliate the sun damage and rough skin from the summer and have your skin glowing and beautiful in time for Valentine’s Day!

Botox is a medication which is administered in a dosage individualized for each person. The Botox dosage is measured in “units”. The most effective way to target wrinkles and achieve great results is from a strategic treatment: choose an appropriate dose (# of units) for each individuals face and precisely target where the Botox should be placed.

This brings us to a practical question: What is the difference in “paying by the unit” vs “paying by the area” for a Botox treatment?

When you “pay per area”, the price is set, regardless of the number of units injected into the area. This is often to a person’s disadvantage. If you do not need as much Botox as the next person, you’re paying the same, but getting less. That doesn’t seem fair, does it?

Some practices choose to charge a set “by the area” price for Botox, but at Newtown MediSpa, we charge “by the unit”. When charged by the unit, you can be confident that you are only paying for the amount that you need. Each face is different. You may need less units than your friend and therefore will pay less.

Then there is the matter of style. Do you want to erase lines, soften your lines, get a brow lift? Botox treatment can range from a conservative, softer look to “not moving a muscle” based on your personal preference. One is not better than the other and there is plenty of room in between the extremes but considering you still want to be able to “show me happy” (as seen on one of my favorite TV shows, Scrubs after Jordan gets too much Botox), we typically use fewer units than many of our contemporaries. Our goal is to help you to look YOUthful and refreshed but not obvious to all that you had a treatment.

Newtown MediSpa prides ourselves on providing a customized treatment plan and tailored experience. Charging “by the unit” is part of that experience. We offer complimentary consultations which includes an examination of your unique facial musculature (we are all unique!), a thorough explanation of how Botox works and a discussion of your desired results. You will be educated on exactly what dosage is right for you.

“I work out absolutely every day. I don’t overeat. I try to drink water but I prefer wine and when all else fails, I get Botox injected right here, right into my forehead, as much as possible!”
